Converters

Dekuz converters translate values between measurement systems, covering length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, pressure, energy, power and more, using metric, imperial and other standard units. Related converters link to each other, for example the Speed Converter, Pace Converter and Fuel Economy Converter, since they share the same underlying units.

What you will find in the Converters category

The converters category covers the units that people meet every day and in technical work. For physical quantities there are the Length Converter, Weight Converter, Temperature Converter, Area Converter, Volume Converter, Speed Converter, Time Converter, Angle Converter, Force Converter, Pressure Converter, Energy Converter, Power Converter and Frequency Converter. For everyday life there are the Cooking Measurement Converter, the Fuel Economy Converter and the Pace Converter. For computing there are the Data Storage Converter, the Data Transfer Rate Converter, the Number Base Converter and the Color Converter. Three tools serve South Asian users: the Pakistan Land Area Converter, the Ser to KG Converter and the Tola to Gram Converter.

Metric, imperial and regional systems

Most of the world uses the metric system, the United States uses customary units that resemble the older imperial system, and many regions keep traditional units for local trade. The result is that a recipe, a car, a plot of land or a piece of jewellery may be described in units that differ from the ones you use. The converters let you move between them while showing the exact factor behind each result. Some factors are exact by definition, such as an inch being 2.54 centimetres, and some depend on a convention, such as the size of a marla or a ser, which the tool pages state clearly. Knowing which kind you are dealing with tells you how much rounding is acceptable.

Picking the right converter for the job

Think of the task, then the quantity. If you are following an American recipe, the cooking measurement converter handles cups and spoons, and the temperature converter handles oven settings. If you are planning a trip, the speed, length and fuel economy converters translate road signs and car ratings. If you are buying property in Pakistan, the land area converter turns marla and kanal into square feet, and the area converter handles square metres and acres. If you are sending a file or buying storage, the data storage and data transfer converters show how big a file is and how long it will take. If you are choosing jewellery in South Asia, the tola converter links local rates to grams and troy ounces.

Exact definitions and rounding

Many modern definitions are exact. An inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms and a foot is exactly 0.3048 metres. A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres. Other factors involve a choice: a US gallon is 3.785 litres, while an imperial gallon is 4.546, and a calorie in food labels is a kilocalorie. The converters keep several decimal places and round for display, so results are accurate enough for planning, cooking, travel and shopping. For engineering, construction and legal documents, keep the full precision during calculations, round only at the end, and use the unit named in the specification.

Traditional South Asian units

Units such as the marla, kanal, ser, maund and tola are still in daily use in Pakistan, India and neighbouring countries. They have a long history, and their values have been defined differently over time and between regions. On Dekuz, the land area converter uses a marla of 225 square feet and a kanal of 4,500, the ser converter uses 933.10 grams, and the tola converter uses 11.6638 grams. When a seller or a document uses a different convention, such as the older marla of 272.25 square feet, a ser rounded to a kilogram or a tola of a slightly different weight, the results will differ. Ask which convention applies, and check it against the legal document or the weighing scale.

Technical units in computing and electronics

Computing adds its own conversions. Storage is measured in bytes, with decimal and binary conventions that make a terabyte drive look smaller in an operating system. Network speeds use bits per second, so a 100 megabit line moves about 12.5 megabytes each second at best. Number base conversion links binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal, which programmers use for memory addresses, permissions and colours. The colour converter moves between HEX, RGB and HSL for web design. Frequency and power converters help with radio, electrical and audio work. In each case the converter shows the factor and the pages explain the underlying idea, so you learn the pattern as well as getting the number.

Mistakes that cause wrong conversions

A handful of errors cause most wrong conversions. People mix up the US and imperial gallon, which differ by about 20 percent. They confuse mass with weight, or kilograms with kilograms-force. They forget that gauge pressure and absolute pressure are different. They compare pace with speed, where a smaller number is better for one and worse for the other. They apply a length factor to an area, when the factor must be squared. They convert temperature by multiplying only, forgetting the offset between the scales. And they read megabits as megabytes. Each tool page has a short section listing the traps for that unit, and checking the unit label twice is the single most useful habit.

Tips for reliable results, and your privacy

To get reliable results, make sure that you have chosen the right units on both sides, enter the number without commas or units, and compare the answer with a quick mental estimate. If a result seems off by a factor of ten, a thousand or exactly the unit ratio, you have probably chosen the wrong unit. Keep extra decimals when you chain several conversions. All converters run inside your browser, so the values you enter are not sent to Dekuz or stored, and they work without an account on any device. If you spot a missing unit or an error, use the contact page, and we will check the factor against a reliable source.

Frequently asked questions about the converters

Why does a terabyte drive show less space on my computer? Manufacturers use decimal units while many systems use binary units, so the same capacity shows as about 931 gigabytes. Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon? No, the imperial gallon is about 20 percent larger. Which marla does the land converter use? The tool uses 225 square feet per marla and 4,500 per kanal, and states that older records may use 272.25. Why is the ser converter not 1 kilogram? The traditional ser is about 933 grams, though some traders round it to a kilogram. Are the factors exact? Many are exact by definition, and the tool pages say when a factor depends on a convention.

A short glossary

A unit is a standard quantity used to measure something, and a conversion factor is the number that links two units. The metric system is based on powers of ten, while customary and imperial units use a variety of ratios. Mass is the amount of matter and weight is the force of gravity on it. Gauge pressure is measured against the surrounding air and absolute pressure against a vacuum. A bit is a binary digit and a byte is eight bits. Hexadecimal is a base 16 number system. A tola, ser, maund, marla and kanal are traditional South Asian units. Precision is the number of digits that are meaningful in a result.

Getting started: a suggested path

Pick the quantity you want to convert and open its tool, for example the Length Converter or the Weight Converter. Enter a value that you can check, such as 1 inch, and confirm that the answer is 2.54 centimetres. Then try the tools you will use most: the Temperature Converter for oven settings and weather, the Cooking Measurement Converter for recipes and the Speed Converter for travel. If you work with data, open the Data Storage Converter and the Data Transfer Rate Converter. If you deal with land or jewellery in South Asia, use the Pakistan Land Area Converter and the Tola to Gram Converter. Each page lists the exact factors and the traps for its unit.
